The challenge


Based near Malham Cove in the heart of the Yorkshire Dales, the Wildman family have stuck to something they know is real. Living a true grazier lifestyle, the embodiment of field to fork farming means they keep a close eye on their herd and the quality of their produce.

This passion has seen them establish themselves as trusted graziers in the heart of the local community.

Chris Wildman, a fifth-generation farmer, grazier and butcher, still rears native-bred livestock as the Wildman family has done for nearly 150 years but he’s added his own take on tradition by specialising in charcuterie and Yorkshire chorizo.

It’s the same high-quality cuts of meat his family are renowned for, prepared with the same care on which each and every grazier prides themselves.

We were challenged with creating a brand that would represent all the heritage, tradition, quality and true provenance of the Wildman story. This is the dream job, because we didn’t have to embellish anything. The Wildman business is real and the back story truly authentic. Real pigs, real cattle, real expertise.

When he came to us Chris Wildman had no brand, no packaging, and no idea how to take his Yorkshire charcuterie to the next level.

What we delivered


We involved Chris right from the very start. From working collaboratively to formulate the brief, to reviewing the market and getting out to see his animals, his farm and his shop at Malham Cove to fully immerse ourselves in the Wildman way. We made sure that everything we did was targeted at building a brand that met - and exceeded – the needs of our client.

The design of a new brand has to be based upon a fundamental truth. We incorporated some of the visual language of old bags and butcher’s labelling originally used by previous generations of the Wildman family. We then brought that up to date with a twenty-first century colour palette and language that reflects Chris Wildman’s no nonsense Yorkshire approach. The numbering system was based upon his father’s original recipe book with numbered recipes for charcuterie. The final results feature a beautiful illustration we commissioned to capture the character of Chris’s prize Oxford Sandy and Black pigs, set within the breathtaking backdrop of Malham Cove. The illustration itself was created by carefully hand-carving the unique scene into English Boxwood and printing onto specialist paper stock through a 160 year-old hand press. The time, care and attention to detail demonstrated by our team of designers, brand strategists and experts marries perfectly to the skill and passion which goes into creating each hand-made Wildman product.

All through the process we supported Chris with our own project management software – Sunrise, with input from our packaging technologists and our own legal compliance team to ensure that nothing stood in the way of a successful launch.
